A little about Tamagotchi
Tamagotchi was the 1st hand-held virtual/electronic pet made. There are many imitations like giga pets, nano pets and neopets. However, Tamagotchi remains and always will be the best! Tamagotchi roughly translates as cute little egg, or lovable egg. So all tamagotchi are egg shaped. The characters that are on the tamagotchi are obtained by the kind of care you give to it.
Tamagotchi P1 and P2
Both P1 and P2 (P = Generation) had only 7 characters. They had completely different characters on each. Also some minor differences in the games, meal and snacks options. The screen was small on them both.

Tamagotchi mini / Chibi
Tamagotchi mini is 1/3 the size of the Tamagotchi Connection. It is very cute and small. It's more like an accessory than a game/toy/pet; whatever you want to call it. It comes in only 3 colors in Japan; those of the original Tamagotchi (pink, light blue & white). In the US it comes in 8 colors if not mistaken. It uses no icons on the screen. It only uses the buttons A-Select B-Execute C-Cancel.

The following characters are available on this tama: Marutchi, Mametchi, Maskutchi, Kutchipatchi, Ginjirotchi, Nyorotchi, Oyajitchi, and Lucky Unchi-Kun (Lucky Poop- Japan only).  When it dies on the Japanese version shows a grave with a ghost above it and on the US version it shows Tamagotchi Planet.

Mesutchi and Osutchi
Mesutchi and Osutchi were released in Japan on December 20th,1997. They come in only 6 different colors, 3 Mesutchi and 3 Osutchi. Mesutchi is the female and Osutchi is the male, they come in pairs.. I think. Here is a photo of one of the sets. When linked up as adults, they may mate and have children. Mesutchi and Osutchi are not sold in the US only in Japan, unfortunately.

 Tamagotchi Angel
Tamagotchi Angel was released February 1st 1998 in the US while being released in August in Japan. Its original name in Japan is Angelgotchi. The Angel is alike to the original Tamagotchi in many ways. Thing is, it’s an angel tama character. You as the owner would play the role as its guardian to guide it back home. It grows faster than a regular tamagotchi and has a touch screen. There are only 4 US colors and 3 Jap colors. The US colors are the same as Japan but the 4th one is yellow. The shells are also slightly different.

Tamagotchi Ocean and Mothra
Tamagotchi Ocean was released in the US in the week of August 5th 1998. This version of Tamagotchi, originally named Umi No Tamagotch, had already been released in Japan around March 1998. It's one of the hardest tamagotchis to raise. Unlike any other tama, the flush screen is used to 'clean' the water in which your character lives. This tama has touch screen because of its predator function and voice sensitive unit. (something attacks the tama and you touch it for it to go away) Each of the 2 types (US/Jap) have 4 different colors.

Mothra was released because of the movie 'Mothra 2'. It is available in only 3 colors: white and blue (most common), white and green (rare) and transparent blue (very rare). It's care is similar to a normal tamagotchi. The egg hatches about 5 minutes after setting the time. The larve would need constant care just like a babytchi for an hour. Mothra gains 1 ton from meals and 2 tons from sweets. You may see your mothra destroying a tower ..this calls for discipline. If it dies from being old, it will lay an egg; if it dies from being sick, it wont.

Morino / Forestgotch
The Morino Tamagotch was released in Japan on February 18th, 1998 in only 4 different colors. The US version was supposed to be released some time in mid summer of 98, but it never happened unfortunately. There are only 4 colors. This tama also has touch screen because of the 'predator' function. In this tama you can choose from 2 eggs to hatch a new character. All the icons on it are different from the regular Tamagotchi. They were changed probably to portray the different types or Tama characters. There are only 6 icons that you can highlight instead of 7. The sound on this tama is slightly different.

Devilgotchi
Devilgotchi was released in September of 1998, again in only 4 colors. It is similar to Angelgotchi, but the characters are evil; so it’s just the opposite. Care for Devilgotchi is also similar to Angelgotchi. Difference is the Devilgotchi would do evil deeds while Angelgotchi does good deeds. It is rare and VERY expensive. It also, like the Ocean, has touch screen and a voice sensitive unit. Here is a picture of all 4 shells.

Santaclautchi / Santagotchi
A Santaclautchi is a tamagotchi that is Christmas and Santa Clause themed. It's character (Santa) doesn't evolve but it can be changed by obtaining different items. If bad care is given to it, he will return to his house and "Super Kutchipatchi" would have to bring him back to the screen. The point of this tama is to deliver presents. If you don't do so in time, the tama would get mad, Santaclautchi would get upset and then you would have to start over. These were on made in Japan in only 3 colors--red, green and white.

Yasashii
Yasashii was released in October 1998. It is very rare so it is quite expensive. It is a rather large tamagotchi. This tamagotchi is much easier to take care of because the characters don't need much attention. It has buttons that light up rather than to having icons on the screen. They will light up when your pet needs something. Yasashii come in only 3 colors - white and pink, yellow and white, and blue and yellow. Other than the "icon buttons" there are 2 buttons - select (left) cancel (right). Being so big, this tama has a stand at the back (like the Deka) and volume control on the side.

This is the white and pink one.

Arukotch
Arukotch is more pedometer like. It has a clip at the back so you can clip it to your belt or whatever. The point of  the game is for Arukotchi, who is a shy girl, to meet gotchi boys and get proposals from them. She finds lots of surprises along the way. Some things make her more attractive while other do the opposite. Game saves screen shots of each proposal. Goal is to collect all fifteen screens. Unlike tamagotchi, you don't feed or clean up after her. It comes in 3 different shells - pink, blue and white.

This is the Blue Arukotch.

Tamagotchi Connection / Connexion / Plus
Tamagotchi Connection is the US version,

Tamagotchi Plus is the Japanese version and

Tamagotchi Connexion is the European version.

Differences: ConneCTion can be debugged but ConneXion can't. Plus is in Japanese.

They were released in 2004 - the come back year of Tamagotchi. These new improved tamagotchi can connect via Infrared. When they connect they make friends and can play games or give/receive presents. In getting friends you can have babies  and move up to another generation. (the parents of these babies must be of the opposite gender obviously) The Connection/xion/plus has new characters as well as old characters from other versions mentioned above.

Being that these pets / toys / games got a lot of sale, and fans asking for more, BANDAI keeps making updated versions. There are now up to 6 versions. Starting from Version 3, BANDAI created an interactive website (Tama Town) to go on and play games, etc. They all come in many different designed shells.
